Steering or suspension problems after an accident
The panels have been repaired, or there was little visible damage, but the car does not drive as it did.
Direct causeImpact loads carried through the wheels and body into the suspension mounting points, moving the geometry even where no component is visibly damaged.
Physical realitySuspension is engineered for vertical loads and is comparatively weak laterally, which is exactly the direction a kerb strike or a side impact loads it. If a mounting point has moved, every component can be undamaged and the geometry still be out, because the geometry is defined by where the parts are held, not by the parts themselves.
Safety riskHigh until measured. Handling faults after a collision tend to show up under emergency braking or in a swerve, which is the worst moment to discover them.
Required fixA measured four-wheel alignment against the manufacturer's figures, plus inspection of the mounting points and the load path. Keep the printout — it is also the record if the repair is disputed.
What usually causes it
- Displaced subframe — moves the control arm pivots, so alignment reads out of specification with no worn parts anywhere.
- Bent steering knuckle or hub — usually shows as camber that cannot be adjusted back into range.
- Bent track rod — steering wheel off centre with the car tracking straight, or the reverse.
- Damaged strut tower or top mount — changes camber and caster, and often knocks or creaks on lock.
Diagnostic verification criteria
How a workshop separates these causes rather than replacing parts in sequence.
- Primary indicator: Alignment readings out of specification on a vehicle whose joints and bushes are all serviceable. Wear and structure produce the same numbers; only the inspection separates them.
- Tolerance limit: Camber that will not come into range on its adjustment means something is bent or has moved. At that point further adjustment is concealment, not repair.
- Secondary failure risk: A repair signed off on appearance leaves a geometry fault that consumes tyres for years, and the cost quietly exceeds the repair that was avoided.
