Car pulls to the left or right while driving
The vehicle drifts toward one side and needs constant steering correction to hold a straight line.
Direct causeUnequal geometry or grip between the left and right front wheels, most often wheel alignment that has moved out of specification.
Physical realityEach front wheel runs at a small built-in angle. When the left and right angles no longer match, the wheels work against each other and the vehicle tracks toward the stronger side instead of running straight.
Safety riskMedium. The vehicle remains controllable, but constant correction is tiring on a long drive and the mismatch wears tyres fast. A pull that appears only when you brake is a different fault and should be looked at sooner.
Required fixEqualise tyre pressures and check for uneven wear first, then a four-wheel alignment. If the pull survives that, inspect the control arm bushes and the steering rack.
What usually causes it
- Wheel alignment out of specification — the most common cause, and often traced to a kerb or pothole strike.
- Uneven tyre pressure or uneven wear — free to check, and it rules out the cheapest cause first.
- Worn control arm bushes — these let the geometry shift under load, so alignment alone will not hold.
- Worn steering rack — less common, but it will not be fixed by an alignment.
Diagnostic verification criteria
How a workshop separates these causes rather than replacing parts in sequence.
- Primary indicator: Swap the two front wheels left to right. If the pull swaps direction with them, the tyre is the cause and no alignment will fix it.
- Tolerance limit: A pull that only appears under braking points to the brakes rather than to alignment or suspension.
- Secondary failure risk: Driving on geometry that is out of specification ruins tyre life quickly — an alignment costs a fraction of a pair of front tyres.
