Steering feels loose or has play
The wheel moves a little before the car responds, or the car wanders and needs constant small corrections.
Direct causeWear in one or more joints in the chain running from the steering wheel to the road wheels.
Physical realityFree play is cumulative. Four joints each slightly worn produce the same play at the wheel as one badly worn joint, which is why “a little wear everywhere” is a real diagnosis and not an evasion. It also degrades slowly enough that drivers adapt to it without noticing.
Safety riskMedium, rising with the amount of play, and consistently underestimated because it arrives gradually. It is a roadworthy failure, and a tie rod end that separates removes steering from that wheel completely.
Required fixThe play has to be measured joint by joint on a hoist while a second person works the wheel. It cannot be diagnosed from the driver's seat, and replacing the obvious joint often leaves most of the play behind.
What usually causes it
- Worn tie rod ends — the outer joints, and the usual first finding.
- Worn inner rack ends — hidden behind the bellows, so they are missed unless the bellows is squeezed and the joint felt through it.
- Worn rack mounting bushes — the rack itself shifts in its mounts, which feels identical from the driver's seat.
- Worn idler or pitman arm — on recirculating-ball systems — still common on older bakkies and trucks, including the vehicles we convert to power steering.
- Loose column universal joint — play that is felt at the wheel but cannot be seen at the road wheels at all.
Diagnostic verification criteria
How a workshop separates these causes rather than replacing parts in sequence.
- Primary indicator: Where the play disappears. Play felt at the wheel that produces no movement at the road wheels is column or rack; play that moves one road wheel and not the other is that side's linkage.
- Tolerance limit: On most light vehicles more than roughly 20–30 mm of rim movement at the steering wheel before the road wheels start to move is a defect, but the figure is model-specific and the manufacturer's specification governs.
- Secondary failure risk: Worn joints throw the alignment out as they move under load, so tyres wear unevenly while the geometry reads correctly on the ramp. Aligning a car with worn joints sets the geometry against parts that will not stay put.
