Knocking or clunking noise over bumps
A dull metallic knock from the front of the vehicle when driving over bumps or uneven road.
Direct causeFree play in a front suspension joint, allowing metal-to-metal contact as the suspension moves through its travel.
Physical realityThese joints and bushes are built with no slack in them. As the rubber perishes or the joint wears, a gap opens up, and the knock you hear is the component reaching the end of that gap under load.
Safety riskHigh. Worn sway bar links and strut mounts are noisy but not dangerous. A worn ball joint is — it can separate, which causes loss of steering control. The noise on its own does not tell you which of them it is, so have it inspected before driving further.
Required fixFront-end inspection on a hoist to isolate which joint is worn, then replacement of that component.
What usually causes it
- Worn ball joints — the one that matters — a failed ball joint can separate.
- Worn sway bar links — very common and comparatively cheap to replace.
- Perished control arm bushes — the rubber hardens and cracks with age and heat.
- Failed strut mounts — often knock when turning as well as over bumps.
Diagnostic verification criteria
How a workshop separates these causes rather than replacing parts in sequence.
- Primary indicator: With the vehicle on a hoist, vertical play at the wheel hub isolates the ball joint. A rattle you can reproduce by hand at the link isolates the sway bar.
- Tolerance limit: Any measurable free play at a ball joint is outside service tolerance.
- Secondary failure risk: A worn sway bar link often hides an equally worn strut mount. Inspect both before quoting, or the noise comes back after the first repair.
