Steering wheel vibration between 80 and 120 km/h
Vibration felt through the steering wheel at highway speeds.
Direct causeRotational imbalance in the front wheel assembly, transmitting oscillation through the steering column.
Physical realityAt 80–120 km/h the imbalance frequency approaches the resonant frequency of the steering linkage, amplifying a small defect into a vibration you can feel.
Safety riskMedium. It accelerates tyre and tie rod wear and does not typically cause sudden failure. A vibration that appears suddenly after a pothole or kerb strike is different — have that inspected before further highway driving.
Required fixFour-wheel balance first, then inspection of the inner tie rods and brake disc runout if the vibration persists.
The three usual causes
- Unbalanced front wheels — the most common cause, and the cheapest to rule out.
- Worn inner tie rods — play in the linkage lets a small imbalance become a felt vibration.
- Warped brake discs — usually felt under braking rather than at steady speed.
Diagnostic verification criteria
How a workshop separates these three causes rather than replacing parts in sequence.
- Primary indicator: vibration present under braking as well as coasting points to disc runout rather than wheel balance.
- Tolerance limit: disc lateral runout above 0.05 mm measured at the friction surface requires machining or replacement.
- Secondary failure risk: prolonged imbalance loads the wheel bearing and can shorten its service life.
