Steering feels heavy or hard to turn
The steering wheel takes noticeably more effort than it used to, especially at low speed.
Direct causeLoss of hydraulic or electric assistance in the steering system, most often from low fluid or a failing pump.
Physical realityThe steering is still mechanically connected, but without assistance you are turning the road wheels against the full friction of tyre on tarmac — which is why it is worst when parking and eases as speed rises.
Safety riskMedium. The vehicle remains steerable. Assistance that disappears suddenly while driving, rather than getting gradually heavier over weeks, is a different matter and should be inspected before further use.
Required fixFluid level and leak check first, then a pressure test of the pump and inspection of the rack. An electric power steering fault needs a diagnostic scan rather than a fluid check.
What usually causes it
- Low power-steering fluid — the cheapest thing to rule out, and often the first sign of a leak.
- Failing power-steering pump — usually accompanied by a whine that rises with engine speed.
- Worn steering rack — typically heavier in one direction than the other.
- Electric power steering fault — on EPS vehicles there is no fluid to check — it needs a scan.
Diagnostic verification criteria
How a workshop separates these causes rather than replacing parts in sequence.
- Primary indicator: Heaviness in both directions points to the pump or the fluid. Heaviness in one direction only points to the rack.
- Tolerance limit: Fluid below the minimum mark with no visible external leak indicates internal loss past the rack seals.
- Secondary failure risk: Running a power-steering pump on low fluid damages it, turning a cheap leak repair into a pump replacement.
